Acclaim for Madonna's Malawi documentary

Madonna the documentary-maker came, saw and conquered the world's biggest film festival yesterday with a powerful polemic on the effects of disease and poverty on Malawi. Next in her sights is the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The queen of reinvention presented her film, I Am Because We Are, which she wrote and produced, to general acclaim. Alongside her was her former gardener Nathan Rissman, who directed.

The film touches on the singer's high-profile adoption of a baby boy, David, whose mother was killed by Aids. Yesterday she compared the process - which generated many negative headlines - to the pain of childbirth. "It was painful and a big struggle and I didn't understand it. But in the end I rationalised that when a woman has a child and goes through natural childbirth she suffers an enormous amount," she said. "So I went through my own kind of birthing pains, dealing with the press on my doorstep, accusing me of kidnapping or whatever."

The singer added: "There's nothing controversial about the adoption. There's just a lot of bureaucracy and administration because this adoption essentially was the beginning of adoption laws in Malawi. I'm sort of the template or role model, so to speak, for future adoptions, and hopefully after we get through this adoption it will be easier for other people to adopt. I'm happy to be the guinea pig." Asked why she chose David, Madonna said: "I don't know, some things are inexplicable. I just felt a connection there. I felt a connection to many of the children, I wanted to take all of them home with me."

While Madonna is the producer, the film-maker is Rissman, who got to know the singer when his wife worked as a nanny. At various times he worked as her research assistant, video archivist, gardener and "manny" and won her over by making short films of her children, which he her sent while she was travelling.

Rissman spent about six months over a two-year period in Malawi, and has constructed a documentary which at times is heartbreaking. Both said they wanted to continue making documentaries focusing on children, with the Israel-Palestine conflict the next project they are working on. The singer said she would continue to help Malawi, and had bought the land, hired an architect and teamed up with Harvard University to build a girls' school in the country. She has also built an orphan care centre. The documentary was not part of the main competition.

Yesterday Steven Soderbergh spoke about his pair of movies, screened together for more than four hours, about the life of Che Guevara, which had been keenly awaited but left the audience baffled by their lack of dramatic structure. Soderbergh said critics complained about movies being too conventional and then complained when someone was not conventional enough. Benicio del Toro, who plays Che, added: "When people see the movie for the third time they will start to see it."

Lindsay Lohan - Party People Offer To Help Lohan

New York party king and queen JOHN ENGLEBERT and SUZIE WONG have joined forced to offer embattled LINDSAY LOHAN a little aid in her ongoing fur coat fuss.

Englebert, who owns the Big Apple's Prime nightclub, and Saki Lounge boss Wong have offered to pay the actress' legal costs and buy her a brand new fur coat - as a thanks for partying at their establishments.

Lohan is being sued by a New York student, who claims the Mean Girls star swiped her $12,000 (GBP6,000) mink coat at a nightclub in January (08).

Englebert has offered to buy Lindsay a new $11,000 (GBP5,500) blonde mink coat, as well as settle the lawsuit against her.

A spokeswoman for the club boss says, "Lindsay has always been a fixture and a party girl in his establishments and John does not want her to catch a cold in this frigid start to the summer."

And Englebert tells American news show Access Hollywood, "I am offering to take Lindsay on a mink shopping spree with me, to have the coat of her choice. My motto has always been, `If the coat fits, buy it.'"

"I always like to include songs I haven't done in the show in awhile," he said, declining to reveal specifics. "We just took out one of the songs we'd been using in the show as part of the rehearsals and replaced it with something that was better-suited and I had definitely wanted to do but couldn't find a place for."

Diamond's last tour in 2005 grossed nearly $80 million from 86 shows that drew 1.2 million people, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Mick Hucknall says that 'ginger' jibes are as bad as racism. The flame-haired Simply Red singer has hit out at "bullies" who mock people born with the vibrant hair colour. He said: "When it comes to name calling for being ginger or for the way you talk, then that's simple bullying. "It worries me to think how seven year-olds running around a playgroundcould get bullied just for the colour of their hair. It's like racism, not the same but the principle is similar. "It has become acceptable to mock people for the colour of their hair. But at the end of the day, you've just got to ignore the jibes and get on with things."Hucknall - who has dated a string of beautiful women including CatherineZeta Jones and Martine McCutcheon - claims people only insult him because they are jealous. He added: "The truth is if you're successful, you've sold a load of albums and slept with a load of women - and all the rest of it is just pure envy."Mick releases his first solo album, A Tribute To Bobby, on May 19.

Sheen fails in bid to stop Richards TV show

Actor Charlie Sheen has lost a bid to prevent his ex-wife Denise Richards from including their two daughters in a new reality TV show, after a Los Angeles judge ruled in the actress' favour.
Sheen is objecting to letting the former couple's girls, three-year-old Sam and two-year-old Lola, take part in the TV programme.
But after a closed hearing at the Los Angeles family court on Tuesday, Commissioner Harvey A Silberman ruled Richards was allowed to include the children in the programme, subject to a number of rules.
The details of which have yet to be released.
Richards was represented in court by her attorney, who participated via telephone, while Sheen attended the hearing with his lawyer.
The TV show will reportedly revolve around Richards' life as a working single mum in Hollywood.
